If the old box is plastic then sometimes you can just crack and rip them down, the cleanest way is to see if you can wiggle some slight clearance between the box and the joist (with a prybar or whatever) then slide an oscillating tool or reciprocating saw with a metal .Metal cabinets provide a layer of EMI shielding.
